Social Grant Application Eligibility Requirement for 2025
The Social grant is offered to eligible South Africans. Before you apply;
The Old Person Eligibility:
- Must be a citizen, permanent resident, or refugee of South Africa
- Must reside in South Africa.
- Must be 60 years of age or older.
- Must meet means test requirements for the spouse.
- Not be maintained or cared for in a state institution.
- Not be receiving another social benefit for themselves. How Do You Apply For Social Grant
The Disabled Grant:
- A permanent or refugee South African citizen.
- Should be a resident of South Africa.
- From the age group between 8 to 59.
- Should submit a medical report or any document that proves his/her disability.
- The spouse must complete the means test standards, and the diagnostic test cannot be over three months old at the time of application.
Grant for War Affectees:
- South African citizen and resident.
- Should be above 60 years and disabled by a war effect.
- Must not be maintained or cared for in a state facility.
- They must not be receiving another social grant for themselves.
- Must have served in World War II or the Korean War, and the spouse must meet the means test standards.
Foster Care Grants:
- The parents of the foster should be South African citizens.
- Both the applicant and the child must reside in South Africa.
- The foster parent must also present a court order establishing the child’s placement in foster care.
- Foster parents must furnish a smart ID card, a 13-digit barcoded identity document, and a birth certificate for the foster child.
- The child must remain in the custody of the foster parent(s).
How To Apply For a Social Grant for 2025
Applicants are required to Choose An Application method. Applications for the SRD Grant can be submitted via WhatsApp, the SRD Website, or the SASSA Chatbot. You should only apply via one method – submitting more than one application will not speed up the process it may slow down your application.
Select from any of these methods:
WhatsApp:
- Send a message via WhatsApp to 082 046 8553
- Provide your details
- You will receive a Reference number, an OTP, and a link to click
- Click on the provided link, fill in your OTP, and verify your account
- Fill in your surname and ID number
- Confirm the personal details that you provided via the WhatsApp chat
SRD Website:
- In your internet browser, visit the SRD Website(if you are a Refugee, Asylum Seeker or Special Permit Holders, find out how to apply here)
- Fill in your mobile number and ID number and click “send SMS”
- You will receive a 6-digit OTP via SMS
- Insert the OTP number on the SRD website and click “verify pin”

SASSA Chatbot:
- In your internet browser, visit the SASSA Website
- Click on the SRD R350 Grant assistance chatbox (the orange box on the side of the screen)
- Fill in your ID number and mobile number
- On the chat, choose the option to apply for the SRD R350 grant
- Click on the SRD website link provided by the SASSA Chatbot
- Follow the SRD website steps
