SASSA Money Increase Update: Is More Coming in 2026?
Yes, the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant was officially increased to R370 in April 2024. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced this R20 rise during the 2024 Budget Speech as part of efforts to ease the impact of inflation and high living costs. As of mid-2025, qualifying individuals across South Africa continue to receive the R370 grant each month, distributed by SASSA through several channels, including direct bank deposits, Post Office pickups, mobile money transfers, and retail outlets such as Pick n Pay and Shoprite.
The SRD grant remains a lifeline for millions of unemployed and financially vulnerable South Africans aged 18 to 59 who do not receive other forms of social assistance. With an estimated 80,000 new applications submitted monthly, the program plays a crucial role in addressing poverty and offering short-term financial relief.
To ensure ongoing support, the government has extended the SRD grant until March 2026, allocating R35.2 billion in funding. This budget ensures that monthly payments continue while broader reforms to the social protection system are being considered.
Although there has been speculation about increasing the grant to R400 or even R500, or introducing a universal basic income, none of these changes have been confirmed or implemented. As of now, the grant remains at R370. Beneficiaries are advised to follow official SASSA platforms for verified updates on any future increases or changes to the grant system.
