The new application process for the SASSA grant focuses on convenience and accessibility, utilizing modern technology and digital platforms. SASSA has introduced an online application portal, accessible through the official SASSA website. The portal provides a user-friendly interface that guides applicants through the process step by step.
Application For Sassa Grant Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the SASSA SRD Grant, you must meet the criteria to apply (note that these criteria may change). The criteria are as follows:
- Be a South African Citizen
- Be A Refugee in South Africa
- Be an Asylum Seeker in South Africa with a valid Section 22 permit or visa
- Be a Special Permit Holder in South Africa (under the Special Angolan Dispensation, the Lesotho Exemption Permit Dispensation, or the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Dispensation)
- Be between 18 and 60 years old
- Meet the means test, with an income of R624 or less per month
- Be unemployed and NOT be receiving financial support from any other source
- Have insufficient financial means to support yourself
- NOT be receiving any other social grants for yourself
- NOT be contributing towards or eligible for UIF payment
- NOT be unreasonably refuse to accept employment or educational opportunities
- NOT be receiving a stipend from NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme)
SASSA Grant Required Documents For Application 2025
Applicants must provide the following during application;
- ID Number
- Full Name and Surname (as printed on your ID Document/ ID Card)
- Gender
- Physical Address
- Contact Information (mobile number, email address)
- SASSA may request further information

How to apply for Sassa Grant 2025
There are 4 ways to do an SASSA online application.
- How to apply for Sassa via WhatsApp
- Send a WhatsApp message to 082 046 8553.
- Next, provide your details as prompted by the chat.
- You will then receive a Reference number, an OTP number, and the website link to click on.
- Click on the link, insert the OTP number, and click verify.
- Provide your surname and ID number.
- Confirm your details as per the details you provided on the chat.
- Agree to the terms and conditions. Read and agree to the Declaration and Consent Document. Agree to and understand the contents of the You and Your Special COVID-19 SRD Grant document.
- Provide your details such as your ID Number, Name, Surname as printed on the ID Document/ Card, and other personal information, e.g., address, gender, etc.
- Next, provide your banking details and choose your payment option. Sassa Online Applications
- You will receive an SMS on your mobile phone like this…Application ID: 123456, 88…081. SASSA confirms the successful update of banking details for BANK NAME.
- Your SRD R350 Grant application is now active.
SRD Website:
- 1) In your internet browser, visit the SRD Website(if you are a Refugee, Asylum Seeker or Special Permit Holders, find out how to apply here)
- 2) Fill in your mobile number and ID number and click “send SMS”
- 3) You will receive a 6-digit OTP via SMS
- 4) Insert the OTP number on the SRD website and click “verify pin”
SASSA Chatbot:
- 1) In your internet browser, visit the SASSA Website
- 2) Click on the SRD R350 Grant assistance chatbox (the orange box on the side of the screen)
- 3) Fill in your ID number and mobile number
- 4) On the chat, choose the option to apply for the SRD R350 grant
- 5) Click on the SRD website link provided by the SASSA Chatbot
- 6) Follow the SRD website steps
