NSFAS Application Window 2026: Is It Open or Closed?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will open its applications portal on September 21, 2025, and close on January 31, 2026, for eligible students to apply for bursaries to support their tertiary education. These bursaries cover essential expenses such as accommodation, tuition, transportation, books, and meals.
To qualify, students from families with a combined annual income of R350,000 or less can apply. This applies to both new and continuing students at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. Students with disabilities from families with an annual income of up to R600,000 are also eligible.
To be considered for NSFAS funding, applicants must meet specific requirements, including being a South African citizen or permanent resident and being enrolled or planning to enroll at a public university or TVET college. Eligible students can apply online through the NSFAS website (www.nsfas.org.za) and track their application status using their ID number or reference number.

NSFAS Online Application Date For 2026-2027
- Applications for NSFAS 2026-o2027 are currently open for all qualified applicants who are now applying or currently enrolled in either a TVET College or a University to apply and receive bursaries to help cater for the academic expenses. NSFAS will open from the 21st of September 2025 and close on the 31st of January 2026. Applicants are to take note of the application deadline because applications submitted after the given deadline will not be accepted.
NSFAS Online Application Eligibility For 2026-2027
Below are those who are qualified for NSFAS for 2026:
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350,000 per annum
- Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600,000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018, whose household income is not more than R122,000 per annum.
NSFAS Online Application Required Documents For 2026-2027
These are the supporting documents when applying for NSFAS
- Applicants must have a copy of their student ID/birth certificate
- A copy of the parent/s or guardian/spouse’s ID
- Proof of income
- Individuals living with a disability must have a Disability Annexure A form
- Applicants who are recognized as vulnerable children by the Department of Social Development must have a completed declaration form
What Does NSFAS Cover For Students For 2026-2027
The NSFAS bursary covers the following for students:
UNIVERSITY STUDENTS:
- Accommodation (As per the actual costs charged by the university, costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
- Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7,500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences
TVET COLLEGE STUDENTS:
- Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in a rural area R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7,350 per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

- Click on the “myNSFAS” tab.
- Register for a myNSFAS account using your email address and phone number.
- Create a secure password and verify your account with the OTP sent to your email and phone.
- Click on “Apply” and follow the prompts to fill in your details.
- Upload all required supporting documents.
- Submit your application and wait for confirmation.
