Step-by-Step NSFAS Online Application Process for 2026-2027:

From the 21st of November 2025 to the 31st of January 2026, the online application window for the NSFAS for the academic year 2026-2027 will be open. Interested and qualified applicants who are now enrolled in either a public university or a TVET college can apply online through the myNsfas portal. Applicants are to bear in mind that applications are strictly online and forms must be submitted before the application deadline.

To be eligible for the NSFAS funds, you must be a South African citizen who is currently enrolled in any of the public universities or TVET colleges and comes from a family with an annual income of less than R350,000. NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

Funds given by Nsfas are indicated for accommodation, living allowance, transport, and learning materials needs to be aligned with the latest approved DHET guidelines. Applicants are to go to the official website of NSFAS, download the application form, fill it out by providing all the needed documents, and submit it before the application deadline. Applications submitted after the given deadline will not be processed; therefore, early application is required.

The NSFAS online application for 2026-2027 will open from the 21st of November 2025, and the applications will close on the 31st of January 2026

Note: Applications for NSFAS funding for the academic year 2025-2026 must be submitted before the deadline

Who Qualifies to Apply for NSFAS 2026-2027

For the 2026-2027 academic year, you can only apply if you are;

All South African citizens
All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350,000 per annum
Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600,000 per annum
Students who started studying before 2018, whose household income is not more than R122,000 per annum.

You must provide the following documents when applying for NSFAS:

Certified copy of your South African ID
Certified ID copies of parents, guardians, or spouse
Proof of income (latest payslips, pension slips, or affidavit if unemployed)
Disability Annexure A form (if applicable)
Consent form signed by all household members whose income is declared
Academic records or proof of registration (if currently enrolled)

What NSFAS Bursary Covers In 2026/2027

Expect to receive the following if you are on the NSFAS Scheme:

UNIVERSITY:

Accommodation
As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,500 per annum
Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
Book allowances R5200 per annum
Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET:

Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
Transport R7000 per annum
Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Create a myNSFAS Account:

Click on myNSFAS icon at the top of the page
Register with your ID number, email address, and cellphone number
Set a secure password and click Register.

Log in to myNSFAS:

After registering, log in with your ID and password to access the application portal.

Start Your Application:

Click on Apply
Fill in your details, academic information, and household income details

Upload Supporting Documents:

Certified copy of your ID
